The brief

A school project that leaves something on the wall.

The school wanted a whole-school project on two themes: unity and respect for nature. The subject gets taught in class, but it usually ends up as posters that come down in July.

The following year the request was about the Christmas nativity: one the children would build themselves, and that could come back out each December rather than sitting in a cupboard in cardboard.

What we built

A mural in class, then a nativity in oversized figures.

The mural is two metres long by 1.55 tall: open hands, the Earth, birds and butterflies. It was cut into panels and shared between classes, each group working on its own zone without seeing the whole.

The nativity, the year after, works on a different principle: the main characters are built at large scale, as oversized figures, so that even nursery-age children can take part with pieces they can handle.

The stable, the figures, the angel on the roof: each element is built separately, then the scene is assembled on a low table, at child height.

The outcome

On the canteen wall, and out every Christmas.

The mural hangs on a canteen wall, where the pupils see it every lunchtime. The nativity is rebuilt by the school each Advent: the parts belong to the school, the workshop only happens once.
