An activity that lasts all day without running out of steam.
A game festival is visited in waves: it fills up in the morning, overflows in the early afternoon, then empties at four. The organiser wanted an activity that could absorb those swings with no queue and no booking.
It also had to work for every age — a toy library hosts six-year-olds and their grandparents — and produce a strong image worth photographing.
The festival's own artwork, cut into panels.
The toy library supplied the artwork. We turned it into a laying plan, panel by panel, each with its own colour code and printed sheet. Two metres tall by one and a half wide.
It runs as a drop-in: you come over, take a panel, lay your pieces, leave when you like. Nobody waits their turn, nobody signs up, and a six-year-old works at the same table as an adult.
Panels join the board as they are finished. The image reveals itself slowly, which brings people back several times during the day to see how far it has got.

Finished two hours before closing.
The mosaic was completed late in the day by visitors who had not come for it. It stayed on display at the festival until closing, then went to the toy library.
